Legend and Mythology

Mayon Volcano is steeped in rich legends and mythology and I’ve always loved hearing these stories especially coming from our lolos and lolas.  The most famous of it all is the tragic love story of Daragang Magayon (the Beautiful Lady) and Panganoron (the Proud One). According to the legend, the two lovers were forbidden to be together, and their love ultimately led to a devastating end. There’s a lot of version to this story but my favorite of it all is this version:

  • In the land of Ibalon long ago lived the fair maiden Daragang Magayon, whose beauty was said to rival the golden sun. She was the cherished daughter of Makusog, chief of their prosperous tribe.
  • One fateful day, Daragang Magayon went walking along the river and lost her footing on the rocks. The rushing waters swept her away as she cried out for help. Fortunately, her pleas were heard by the brave warrior Panganoron and his trusted guard Amihan, who dove into the river to save her.
  • Grateful for her rescue, Daragang Magayon instantly fell for Panganoron’s courage and strength. Likewise entranced by her beauty, Panganoron asked Makusog for his daughter’s hand in marriage. But the chief had to refuse, for tribal law forbade marriages outside of the clan. Though it pained him to deny his daughter’s happiness, Makusog felt bound by duty to uphold tradition.
  • This news enraged Panganoron’s rival, the volatile Patuga, who had long sought Daragang Magayon’s affection in vain. Consumed by jealousy, Patuga captured Makusog and forced Daragang Magayon to accept his proposal instead.
  • On their wedding day, Panganoron arrived with his warriors to free his beloved, and a bloody clash erupted between the rivals’ tribes. Though Panganoron succeeded in defeating Patuga, Daragang Magayon perished from a stray arrow, never to grace the earth with her beauty again.
  • It is said that where Daragang Magayon was laid to rest, the majestic Mount Mayon arose overnight as a monument to her memory. To this day, legends persist that whenever Mount Mayon erupts and fumes, it is the two rivals continuing their battle for the heart of the fair Daragang Magayon. Their doomed romance forever transformed the landscape, leaving behind the iconic Mayon Volcano as a testament to the power of love.

The legend of Daragang Magayon and Panganoron is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the Bicol region, and it has been passed down through generations in the form of oral traditions, songs, and dances. The legend of Mayon Volcano continues to inspire various forms of art, literature, and cultural expressions, serving as a symbol of undying love and the enduring power of nature.
