Back in 1773, this architectural marvel was constructed by dedicated Franciscan missionaries. Picture this: Daraga was just a quaint barrio under the umbrella of the town of Cagsawa at that time.
Fast forward to 1814, the eruption of Mayon Volcano wreaked havoc on several towns, wiping the towns off the map, Cagsawa included.
But here’s where the tale takes an unexpected turn. The resilient survivors of Cagsawa, determined to rise from the ashes, chose Daraga as their new haven. And they brought their unwavering commitment to attending Sunday mass, which found its sanctuary in the heart of Daraga—the resilient Daraga Church.
Architecture
Daraga Church, also known as the Church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria, showcases a combination of Baroque, Mexican Baroque, and Renaissance Gothic architectural styles. Built in 1773 by Franciscan missionaries, its facade is primarily made of volcanic stones and features four columns with medallions depicting the Evangelists.
The facade also displays the coat of arms of the Franciscan Order, images of Franciscan saints, and an image of Our Lady of the Gate. The belfry, constructed as an octagonal column, exhibits images of the 12 apostles, all crafted from volcanic stones. This church serves as a notable example of religious architecture in the Philippines, highlighting the skill and craftsmanship of its builders.

Daraga Church is culturally and historically important in Albay. It earned the status of a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 2007. The church has been through rehabilitation efforts to safeguard its cultural and historical value, ensuring that its beauty and significance are preserved for future generations.
How to Get There
Daraga Church is located about 6 kilometers away from Legazpi City. From Legazpi City, take a jeepney bound to Daraga. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Daraga municipal hall, where you will find a stairs leading up the church.
From Cagsawa Ruins, take a jeepney bound to Daraga and ask the driver to drop you off at Jollibee Daraga. Look for the road leading up to the church.
What to Expect
Daraga Church is situated on top of Sta. Maria hill above the busy town of Daraga. When facing the church, tourists are able to get a good view of the Mayon Volcano to the right.
In 2007, the church was declared a Cultural Treasure by the National Museum and was approved for restoration. A lime coating was applied to the church’s facade to protect its structure. However, it did took away to “old look” of the church but not to worry as the “old look” will return in due time.
Near the church is a casual dining restaraunt called Red Labuyo. It is situated in front of the entrance of the church, and is known for its chili fingers dish, which is a popular local delicacy in Albay that you must try out!
